Starting Your Freelance Writing Business

Business plans are important, no matter what field you choose to start a small business. This is also the case when you’re a freelance writer working from home. Writing a business plan usually starts with having a mission or vision statement. These tips on how to create your mission and vision statement may help you get the process started.

Before you can begin to see a vision for your freelance writing career, you may want to ask yourself some questions so you can create a mission statement.

What is your purpose for writing? Is it merely to make money to live, or is there a higher, more important reason? It will explain why you started your business and what you hope to achieve by working it.

Typically, mission statements will have three areas:

1. Purpose – Why are you in business and what do you hope to achieve? 2. Services – What services or products are you providing? 3. Values – What is important to you and your business? What are the values you live your personal life by and will run your business by?

Establishing the Vision and Direction of Your Freelance Writing Business

To help you establish a vision for your freelance writing business, you may want to think a little more and answer these questions:

• Where would you like your freelance writing career to take you in the near future? What about the distant future? What is your ultimate goal for your writing?

• Where are you no in relation to your writing? Is there training you could take which would improve your writing skills? Are there other things you could learn which would propel your freelance writing career forward?

• Do you have creative goals you would like to achieve? Do you think you “have a book in you” that is trying to make itself known?

• What financial goals do you have for your freelance writing business? How successful do you see yourself this year, next year, and into the future? Will you make enough freelance writing to quit your regular job or will you be content writing on the side?

• How do you need to change your life now to be sure you meet these goals? Are you willing to spend less time in some areas of your life to concentrate on achieving these career goals?

• How much time are you willing to spend each day in serious writing in order to achieve your writing goals?

Once you have the answers to these questions, you can use them to help you decide what steps to take to live out the “dream” of owning your own freelance writing business. Think about how to create your mission and vision statements by answering these questions, and you’ll have them to incorporate into your business plan before you know it.
